Core solutions Telecoms Fixed line
The telecoms industry is characterised by enormous investment in fixed infrastructure generally in metropolitan and industrial areas. It delivers voice, data and video capabilities usually from a backbone SDH/SONET network employing copper, fiber and wireless technologies. The challenge facing telecoms operators is to meet the increasing demand for bandwidth cost effectively.
Traditional technologies are severely limited in meeting this challenge.
Whilst users are increasingly demanding Ethernet at 10/100Mbps or ATM
services up to 622Mbps, traditional copper telephone lines only handle 2Mbps
per pair.
As a means of closing the last mile connectivity bottleneck, FSO avoids
trenching costs as well as prohibitions and other delays. It is also a fully
recoverable, moveable asset.
In contrast to Radio (RF) solutions, FSO avoids licensing issues and the
possibility of large capital outlays. It does not interfere with other transmission
equipment - a common hazard in many high density environments.
