in fixed infrastructure generally in metropolitan and
industrial areas. It delivers voice, data and video capabilities
usually from a backbone SDH/SONET network employing copper,
fiber and wireless technologies. The challenge facing
telecoms operators is to meet the increasing demand for
bandwidth cost effectively. |

Whilst users are increasingly demanding
Ethernet at 10/100Mbps or ATM
services up to 622Mbps, traditional copper telephone
lines only handle 2Mbps
per pair. |

connectivity bottleneck, FSO avoids
trenching costs as well as prohibitions and other
delays. It is also a fully
recoverable, moveable asset. |

In contrast to Radio (RF) solutions,
FSO avoids licensing issues and the
possibility of large capital outlays. It does not
interfere with other transmission
equipment - a common hazard in many high density
environments. |
